UPDATE 9/18/15: In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Guillermo del Toro says, “We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.” SO THERE IS HOPE!
Please let this not be true! Let's start a petition! Let's start a riot!
According to THR, the much anticipated follow-up to Guillermo del Toro's big budget monster movie "isn't a sure thing." Sources claim Legendary Pictures has halted production on Pacific Rim: Maelstrom indefinitely, delaying the film beyond its planned August 2017 release - if it gets made at all.
Since the first film was expensive to produce (money well spent I say) but didn't "perform well" in the US market (though was an international blockbuster - especially in China) Legendary had been hesitant to green light the sequel. They did move forward after a huge showing on Blu-ray and On-demand.
The issue isn't necessarily Pacific Rim itself. Recent huge budget blockbuster flops, other big monster movies (Kong and Godzilla) and other "problem projects" currently in progress have apparently made the financing departments gun shy over what should be a no brainer.

Give Guillermo the money, people. He's one of the few directors that deserves to spend it. And one of the few I'll give it to.
