News Flash - Phineas and Ferb get 'LOST'

9/30/2014

This coming Monday night 7:30EST, our boys of summer, Phineas and Ferb bring us another 'special' episode full of Easter eggs for grown up fans of the cult TV show, LOST!
Picture
David Lindelof, the mastermind behind LOST, is a huge fan of the show and wrote an episode with P&F's Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh that is chock full of LOST send-ups (and maybe some guest voices!)

Also, it may be noted, that one the main mysteries surrounds the other 'Agent P', Peter Panda! PANDA! Never say no to PANDA!!! (Inside joke, sorry.)

According to Disney's Blog, "This episode has time travel, strange happenings, and polar bears...[and a] long line of LOST plot twists. It is definitely one episode Phineas and Ferb fans and LOST fans will watch over and over again to catch all the details."

With the Star Wars episode, this LOST ep. and the upcoming Halloween special featuring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, I will be sure to keep my nerd radar at the ready to catch all the Easter Eggs in the months to come!

TV Review: Gotham "Selina Kyle"

Can I just say that I want to hang out in Fish Mooney’s club?  It looks amazing.  But I probably don’t want to be there when she’s there, as she is definitely one scary bitch.
Speaking of scary, Gotham’s Penguin is way darker than I’ve ever imagined him to be - but I can see him developing into a truly terrifying villain.  But will he have to wait for Fish to die before he can come back to Gotham?
Picture
Of course, the real star of this episode is Selina Kyle, aka “Cat.”  I had thought she was closer to 16 than 13, but whatever.  She may not have her leather catsuit yet, but her feline mannerisms are definitely on display as she escapes the horrible people who are abducting street kids in this episode - with nefarious intent, no doubt, though what they intend to do with the abductees is never explicitly stated.  Lili Taylor and Frank Whaley, two of my favorite character actors, are exquisitely creepy as they terrify the teens - up until Gordon and his partner come to the rescue.
Picture
Gordon confronts everyone in this episode – his boss, his partner, his fiancée, and even the mayor - and as Fish likes to point out, he’s a man of little foreplay.  I would wonder where all this sometimes bizarrely expressed integrity will get him, but we all know the answer to that, don’t we?
Picture
Last but not least, we get a view into the goings-on inside Wayne Manor.  I must admit, I expected Alfred to be a bit more posh and proper; this version of Bruce’s butler and guardian is more than a bit rough around the edges.

His love for Bruce is evident, but he’s just not the refined influence I’ve come to expect in many other versions of the Batman saga.  Gotham’s Alfred is more thug in a tux than proper British butler.

Like everything else, we’ll see how it develops…I’m on pins and needles waiting for Episode 3!

TV Review: Agents of SHIELD "Shadows"

After a first season of ups and downs, the second season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD has a clear direction and comes out of the gate swinging.
****Spoilers Below*****

So flashback, 1945, Peggy Carter and the Howling Commandos (or at least 2 of them) bust up the "last" of the Hydra outposts and box up a dangerous metal artifact and label it 084 - the FIRST 084 (object or person of unknown origin.) This also gives us a taste of the team in action for the Peggy Cater mini-series coming this winter. I love a woman that takes charge and kicks ass - I couldn't be happier!
Picture
After the events of The Winter Soldier, SHIELD is still enemy #1 along side HYDRA and is being hunted by General Talbot (Heroes alum, Adrian Pasdar) and the US Government.

Besides a new, battle-ready Skye, the ever-awesome Melinda May, and the return of Agent Tripplet (yeah!), we meet a bunch of new 'Agents' in an undercover sting that goes wrong. And before you can say, "hey, who the hell is this guy?" - there is a new heavy hitter in town and he's bullet proof...
Picture
The team 'goes dark' and returns to the Playground. As an audience we are bombarded with the cast of new characters. Tons of, "oh, who is that?" "who is that?" "Lucy Lawless is so cool!" "Hey, where's Fitz and Simmons?"

Oh. Fitzsimmons. I. can't. even. I just can't.

TV REVIEW: Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Premiere

The entire episode is summed up in the final line... "Magnificent."

Seriously, I love this crazy-ass show.
***Spoilers Below***
Right out of the gate, we go from the final shot of last season of Ichabod in the casket, to one year in the future. Abbie and Ichabod are celebrating his 251st birthday and lamenting the deaths of Jenny and Katrina.

Wait... What?!

Before we can even question what we missed, Abbie gets a call, and it's lock and load into a face-off with the headless horseman while trying to retrieve Benjamin Franklin's notes from some professor. They fight together like a well oiled machine, blessed bullets, special crossbow bolts... BANG! KICK ASS!
Picture
They recover Franklin's notes, and thanks to the fact that Ichabod was his apprentice (of course he was...) they discover that the famous key on the kite in the lightning storm wasn't about electricity, but his attempt to destroy the key to Purgatory! This, of course will allow anyone out of Purgatory without a soul exchange (which is how Abbie was trapped there to let Katrina out last season.)

Too bad we didn't have this a year ago... Whelp, better make sure Molloch doesn't get the key... Hey, I know - let's see if Henry (the Horseman of War and Ichabod's son) can tell us anything. (WHAT!)

Turns out he was somehow captured and is being held in the devil's trap room. Mr. Sin Eater gets nothing from the pages, but Abbie remembers Jenny found a sketchbook of Franklin's a few years ago...

Wait... are we getting a flashback? What in Purgatory happened over the last year!!

Oh, yeah - a year hasn't gone by. Ichabod's still in the box. Abbie is still in Purgatory - and now Henry/Jeremy/Horseman of War/Sin Eater knows how to find the key to unleash Moloch and his undead army.
Picture
And that is just the first 15 minutes of the show.

And Jenny isn't dead, she's captured and being tortured by Henry and his minions.
And Katrina isn't dead, she is being wined-and-dined by the Headless Horseman. (Ew!)

TV REVIEW: GOTHAM – THE FIRST EPISODE

9/23/2014

Picture
The opening scene is one any self-respecting Batman fan is familiar with:  young Bruce Wayne weeping in an alley, watching the life drain out of his parents after a robber shoots them.

So what is new about this Gotham?

How about a teenage Catwoman watching the scene from above, perched in a fire escape after pickpocketing her way through Gotham’s night life?

Cut to the police station – a heroic James Gordon, newly minted detective, and his partner, the brusque, brutish Harvey Bullock, are in the midst of an argument about how to deal with an out-of-control suspect who steals a cop’s gun when they are ordered to the Wayne murder scene.  And so the tale begins…

The characters are, of course, what brings us all to Gotham - and what a motley crew they are!

Harvey Bullock is the stereotypical overworked, cynical detective, who has convinced himself that his corruption is an inevitable result of staying alive in Gotham.  He’s a little too close for comfort to Fish Mooney, Falcone’s right-hand woman, but he definitely feeds us some of the best lines of this episode:

“This is not a city, or a job, for nice guys.” - to Gordon

“If I want riddles, I’ll read the funny pages.” - to Ed Nygma, a crime scene technician who will become The Riddler

Picture
Picture
Fish Mooney is a sultry poison - second in charge to the kingpin of Gotham’s underworld, and looking to move up in the world, whether Falcone is ready to retire or not.  Her moves include giving The Penguin, who had been her faithful lackey until he ratted her out to Major Crimes, the beating that results in his signature limp.

Urban Fantasy Book Review - Downfall

9/19/2014

Picture
Like the Winchester brothers?

Well, they aren't the only dysfunctional demon hunting siblings in town - meet Cal and Niko Leandros.

Cal is half-human, half-Auphe - a nasty race of killer dark elves from the dawn of time
. To say he has issues would be an understatement. Niko is his super-warrior older brother who refuses to let Cal fall into darkness - at least not alone.

Rob Thurman has created a dark, gritty, bloody world of demons, werewolves, vampires, angels, gods and monsters to rival most urban fantasy out there.
Her flawed heroes keep it interesting, and it is an excellent series for filler when you are waiting for the next big book release.

The first book in the Cal Leandros series is
Nightlife, if you are interested.

***Review with spoilers for the latest book after the break*****
