Review - Forever Sneak Peek

Xfinity has a preview of the premiere episode of ABC's new fantasy drama, Forever. Since I've been home sick the past few days, I've seen it.

My assessment: meh.

It is formula TV at its finest. The cast is good, but I couldn't stop thinking, "I've seen this all before."

1/4 Captain Jack Harkness minus charisma +
1/4 The Highlander minus swords +
1/4 Sherlock Homes minus Watson +
1/4 shows that have done this plot and failed (Amsterdam & Moonlight) =
Forever

Every 'twist' was predictable. Every character a cliche. Female cop love interest, seriously? Even the 'big reveal' <spoilers> that Judd Hirsch's character was found and raised from a child in WWII by the main character is straight out of Highlander. They even run an antique shop for goodness sake!

Ioan Gruffudd is an admirable lead, but I don't think his appeal alone can save this show from a swift mid-season cancellation.

Super geek - Nick Frost!!!
Picture
According to the BBC, Nick will co-star along with Natalie Gumede, Faye Marsay, Nathan McMullen and Michael Troughton (son of Dorctor #2 Patrick Troughton) as guest stars for the 2014 Doctor Who Christmas Special with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman.
“I'm so thrilled to have been asked to guest in the Doctor Who Christmas Special, I'm such a fan of the show. The read-through was very difficult for me; I wanted to keep stuffing my fingers into my ears and scream 'No spoilers!' Every day on set I’ve had to silence my internal fan-boy squeals!"

A Deadpool Movie? Don't mess with us on this...

OK, we've gotten our hopes up before. Even recently with the 'test footage' that was released a month or so ago. Other outlets have already reported that is has been 'confirmed' there was an announcement yesterday from 20th Century Fox that a Deapool feature film will be release in early 2016.

Not wanting to break our hearts (or yours) again, we waited to release this information until we had REAL confirmation from somewhere other than another hopeful blog...
According to Variety - IT IS TRUE!!!

A live-action Deadpool movie has been slated by Fox and Marvel for a February 12th 2016 release!
Picture
No word on if Ryan Reynolds will be reprising his role as Wade Wilson in the new film, however we do know that XMen: Days of Future Past hit a giant reset button on the XMen universe, erasing both XMen 3 and Origins:Wolverine, where they completely botched their first attempt to bring the 'Mercenary with the Mouth' to the big screen.

Here's hoping you don't screw it up the second time, boys!

The official Avengers 2 movie synopsis was released today and it doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know.

(We're still excited though.)

Marvel Studios presents "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth's Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision.

New Shows We’re Excited About This Fall

9/15/2014

by Jen
Now that the dust has settled and Guardians of the Galaxy has secured its place as the leading blockbuster of the summer, it’s time to turn our attention to the upcoming fall television season.  With so many fantastic new shows coming up, what’s an overexcited geek girl to do?  Make a list and check it twice, of course!

Here are the shows we are most excited about in the coming weeks and months:

Picture
Constantine

No matter how you felt about Keanu Reeve’s portrayal of Constantine in the 205 film, fans of DC Comics’ Hellblazer should be excited about this small-screen incarnation.  Unlike Reeve’s character, this John Constantine will be a blond Brit and the show is set in London - those consistencies alone will make this show easier for fans of the comic books to embrace!  NBC’s website describes the title character as a “seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult… armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and a wickedly naughty wit.”  The trailer left me wanting more, so I’ll have this premiere marked on my calendar - or at least set on my DVR!  Constantine premieres Friday, October 24 at 10/9c on NBC.

Picture
The Flash

From his first appearance in a 1940 DC Comics publication, The Flash quickly (ha!) became the iconic speedster of American comic book mythology.  Although four different men have been used The Flash name in the comics, this Arrow spin-off focuses on Silver Age Flash Barry Allen, a CSI whose injury in a laboratory explosion results in the development of super speed.  The casting of John Wesley Shipp, who played The Flash in a 1990s television show, as Barry Allen’s imprisoned father, is a nice touch.  The Flash premieres Tuesday. October 7 at 8/7c on the CW.

Picture
Forever

The premise of Forever sounded hauntingly familiar at first - a medical examiner in NYC who is unable to die.  Will it be reminiscent of Jack Harkness in Torchwood?   Or more like Highlander?  And doesn’t it sound a little like Pete Hamill’s novel of the same title?  But after watching the first episode (which is available on abc.go.com), I have to say this feels like an original crime drama with a supernatural twist - a la Pushing Daisies, but not quite so fanciful!  Check out the premier online, or at its regular time slot when Forever premieres Monday September 22 at 10/9c on ABC.

Picture
Gotham

The Good.  The Evil.  The beginning.  There have been so many movies, television shows, cartoons, and comic books exploring the origins of the heroes and villains of the DC universe - but what about Commissioner Gordon?  Fox’s new series will explore the development of some of the greatest villains of Batman’s  hometown, and introduce a new one - Jada Pinkett Smith’s Fish Mooney -  through the eyes of the detective who becomes the most important police official in the city.  Gotham premieres Monday, September 22 at 8/7c on Fox.

Picture
Gracepoint

I love closed story arcs, especially mysteries.  Harper’s Island (2009) rocked my world, and I’m hoping for a similar experience when it comes to Gracepoint.  And it doesn’t hurt that the ten episode series features David Tennant, albeit an irritable and bossy Tennant sporting an American accent.  Even if you watched the BBC verision of the series, Broadchurch, check out this murder mystery set in a small town, where no one knows who (if anyone) to trust.  Gracepoint premieres Thursday October 2 at 9/8c on Fox.

Star Wars Rebels

Set five years before A New Hope, Star Wars Rebels will (as its title suggests) explore the various factions that came together to become the Rebel Alliance.  Just like its predecessor, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this new show was developed and produced by Lucasfilm Animation and will feature the same spectacular animation style.  While I was initially hesitant to invest in the Clone Wars series, my kids made me watch it and I fell in love with the dynamic storytelling; I’m hoping for more of the same in this new series.  Also, it’s been rumored that there will be tie-ins with the upcoming Episode VII!  Star Wars Rebels will premier with a special one-hour episode Friday October 3 at 9pm on the Disney Channel.  Regular half-hour episodes will begin airing on Monday October 13 at 9pm on Disney XD.

Selfie

Oh, Selfie.  The truth is this type of sitcom isn’t really my bag, but then there’s Karen Gillan!  Amy Pond!  And also the amazing dry wit of John Cho!  So apparently I’m going to have to give this modern-day My Fair Lady a chance and see if it grows on me.  The first episode is available now on Hulu, and Selfie premieres Tuesday September 30 at 8/7c on CBS.

Outlander - Quit Playing Games with my Heart

9/12/2014

By Miss Sally
Ah, Outlander. The show is setting itself up to be a major guilty pleasure. That doesn’t mean the cynical Sally in me can’t give a few plot points the side-eye. Spoilers ho, mateys!

Up until now, Claire has tried and abandoned various methods of escape from Castle Leoch, including an unsuccessful attempt to put her watchers to sleep with 18th-century herbal roofies. She hasn’t managed to find her way back home just yet, but she continues to make waves in her new world by healing the ill, butting heads with the men and doing good deeds around town - with a little help from the all-knowing Geillis and heartthrob Jamie.

Picture
…and his thighs.
Unfortunately for Claire, Dougal’s grasp has not loosened, and in Episode 5, “Rent,” he has commanded her to join him and his men as their mommy healer on a dangerous ride around the countryside.

Claire tags along as her captors collect the country folk’s dues to the Laird. They also use Jamie’s scars to raise some extra cash and tell crude jokes in Gaelic to exclude Claire. Feeling left out of the cool kids’ group, she picks some fights with Dougal and Angus, refuses to eat her dinner of perfectly good animal leather, and storms off to the river “to wash” a few times. (Let’s hope she washed after her afternoon massaging “hot piss” fabric with the womenfolk.)

Let’s talk about Claire’s stormy relationship with Dougal for a moment. If looks could kill, those two would eyebrow-glare each other to death. Does anyone else feel that she’s pushing her luck with this guy? We all love Claire for her principles and big mouth, but the pointed contradiction between her 1940s sass and every other submissive female in 18th-century Scotland is pretty heavy-handed. The comment “I’ve never heard a woman tell a joke before!” made me Picard-facepalm.
Picture
BUT WAIT! In case you had finally pegged them as straight-up antagonists, the men keeping Claire captive are actually honorable brutes! You know, sometimes they try to kill her, sometimes they try to rape her, but it’s all good because if anyone else tries those shenanigans, the clansmen got her back: “You’re a guest of the MacKenzie. We can insult you, but God help any other man that does.” Aww, so sweet.

Finally, in a plot twist to endear the MacKenzies to the viewers once more, we discover the men are Jacobites. Their plan is to raise coin from poor folks to fund rebellions and restore the House of Stuart to the throne. So they’re not criminals, they’re the passionate, political men of history! Feel bad for judging them now? Claire does. Thus the Stockholm syndrome in the making marches onward.

In the meantime, Claire is inching closer to getting under Jamie’s kilt. Episode 5 gives us a brief, lingering hand touch. Oh, the tension! Someone wake me up when they actually get to first base.

Episode 5 ends on a pointed cliffhanger that finally gives Claire a semblance of choice in her fate. Will she choose loyalty to her Scottish captors, or potential freedom with the Red Coats?
The real question is, anyone see this year’s kilt blowing contest at DragonCon?
