Last night huge news hit that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to appear in Captain America 3, which many are speculating will start Marvel's popular 'Civil War' comics story line in their cinematic universe. Joe and Anthony Russo are the directors who brought us the outstanding Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are currently developing Captain America 3. Also, if Joss Whedon decides not to come back to direct Avengers 3 and 4, the Russo brothers may be the guys to jump in and replace him. |
The rumor comes from Variety and other outlets, such as Badass Digest who says,
"How closely will Captain America 3 tie in with Avengers 3? I’ve been told that the Russo Brothers are in talks to direct Avengers 3 and possibly 4. Sources tell me that they’re the favorites of Marvel right now and that they are the guys Kevin Feige wants to pick up the mantle from Joss Whedon."
They did a hell of job with The Winter Soldier, and I can only imagine Cap 3 will be even better. Marvel obviously loves working with these guys, and you know what? If anyone comes in to replace Whedon on The Avengers films, it should be them.
Badass Digest goes on to offer a theory about Age of Ultron and how it might lead to Captain America 3's Civil War story.
Badass Digest goes on to offer a theory about Age of Ultron and how it might lead to Captain America 3's Civil War story.
"The fallout of Avengers: Age of Ultron is going to be huge in this movie. There is a lot of destruction in that film. It makes an impact. More than that, Marvel is looking at Cap 3 as Avengers 2.5. It's going to be another ensemble picture, and it could feature Cap's new team from the end of Age of Ultron, which will probably include Falcon, War Machine, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Vision - and once again the events of a Captain America movie will reshape the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
A leading wild theory as to how Civil War may work into future movies is that Tony's guilt after the destruction caused by his creation, Ultron, in Avengers 2 moves him to retire from the Avengers and to support the movement to hold "heroes" accountable for their actions and reveal their identities via the Superhuman Registration Act. This puts him at odds with Cap (seeing it as an infringement on civil rights) and makes the Avengers team outlaws for not complying.
I'm not sure I see RDJ's Tony Stark signing up to work with the government, but I guess it could happen...
As some know, the comic series ends with the assassination of Captain America. Could this happen in the movie? Badass Digest reports that multiple sources say that the title of Captain America 3 could be Captain America: Fallen Son.
But since the bulk of the Civil War mayhem is rumored for Avengers 3, I wouldn't see that happening so quickly. And then there is all the Thanos/Infinity Stone set-up that is far more likely to play out than Civil War in my opinion - at least in Avengers 3...
The Civil War story line would be a bold and dark direction for the cinematic universe to take, but it would allow for the passing of hero mantles to other actors as they reach the end of their contracts.
Personally, I think that it would be awfully hard to do properly with many of the other main Marvel characters (Fantastic Four, Spiderman, Wolverine etc.) tied up in movie contracts with 'not Disney.'
It is all just speculation for the moment, but an interesting rumor nonetheless.
