If you’ve never tried a visual novel game, you might be pleasantly surprised-- they’re way more fun than the dull-sounding name implies. Since all you need for a visual novel is a bunch of text and some fun choices to make (and usually a sugar-coating of anime) this genre can go all sorts of interesting and bizarre directions.
| I recently replayed Digital: A Love Story, an indie darling from 2010 and a definite example of a visual-novel-gone-off-the-rails. Set in the cyberspace of the 1980s, complete with dial-up modem screeching, it’s more of a mystery than the “love story” but I doubt you’ll complain once you’re having fun pretending to be a hacker. |  |
| In the beginning, you might want a pencil and paper for this one: this game is big on immersion, so there are very few shortcuts. Also, reply to -everything- on the BBSs just in case; it’s the best way to advance the story and there are some fun hidden jokes. |  |
