Random Review - Pentatonix in Concert

A capella music, I think, falls into the geeky category - at least it is something that I geek out pretty hard over. I mean who isn't excited about Pitch Perfect 2?

Saturday night, I got to see Pentatonix live in Atlanta at the Tabernacle. I brought two of my best friends and my 16 yr old niece. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. You know how you hope a band you love sounds as good in concert as they do on their albums -yeah, they are BETTER live. And (with the exception of Kevin's amazing cello) the entire concert is 100% vocal magic.
Picture
Pentatonix, for those of you who don't know, is a five-person a capella ensemble who won the NBC vocal competition show The Sing Off  three years ago. Since then, they have released five albums and an endless stream of (award winning) YouTube videos - and toured the world.

Last year's Christmas album That's Christmas to Me, recently went PLATINUM. For a few days, that album was #1 on the iTunes charts, dethroning Taylor Swift. An a capella group. Oh, and they won a GRAMMY for their Daft Punk Medley. No big deal.
The absolute ridiculous talent each of the members should frankly be illegal. Scott Hoying has a soulful R&B voice that is the core of the lead trio. Mitch Grassi has a voice like a knife and a range comparable to any and all of the great pop & R&B divas. Kirsty Maldonado, the only female in the group, has a smoky, Top 40 voice with a smirk that perfectly blends and balances with Scott and Mitch (they all grew up singing together in Texas.)

In my opinion, what makes PTX truly great are mega-bass Avi Kaplan and vocal percussionist and cello-boxer extraordinaire Kevin K.O. Olusola.  You can barely hear Avi in concert sometimes because of all the screaming women - seriously the only thing that could make that guy hotter would be if he had a British accent. When he drops the base, it shakes the room. At the mid-point of the concert, Kevin brings out his cello and plays some of his original 'cello-boxing' arraignments. His instrumental and rhythmic skills are off-the-charts amazing. Speaking of charts, his new solo album, Renegade, is currently #1 on the iTunes classical charts.
Together they are undeniable.

The stage production on this tour reflects their success over the last year, with more lights, effects and staging than their 2014 tour. But all of the extra glitz doesn't take away from their set, which includes mostly their up-tempo covers and original songs. If I had any critiscm at all it would be that some of their ballads are favorites of mine that I would have loved to hear live. This tour is meant to be an a capella rock concert and it is. The show is only about 90 minutes - any longer and they would burn out their voices for sure - but they give everything for the whole time, with barely any chit chat or filler.

Here is one of my favorite numbers they performed - their cover of Imogen Heap's Aha! from PTX Volume 1.
They also announced that they are recording their next album currently , which will be all original music and they they will be the opening act for Kelly Clarkson in the fall.
Picture
Oh, and they are going to be in Pitch Perfect 2 - we caught our first glimpse of them in yesterday's trailer!
Needless to say, if you ever get the chance to see them in concert, I highly recommend it.

The Truth is Out There!

Exciting news for fans of the X-files - Fox has just confirmed that they are bringing the show back in a special six-episode run!  Creator Chris Carter will return for this event, as will stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

Rumors had been flying about this potential reboot for some time - back in December, Duchovny spoke to USA today about the possibility of returning to the X-files, joking, "It will be in some kind of limited form.  We're all old, we don't have the energy for a full season!"

While it's true that Mulder and Scully aren't the young pups they once were, we can't wait to see what they'll get up to in six new episodes!  Filming will begin this summer, and Fox has not yet announced when the new installments will air.

Interview with Author Ciara Knight

If you haven’t read Ciara Knight’s books, you don’t know what you’re missing out on! This talented writer builds amazing worlds for her characters that leave you wanting more.  I sat down with her recently to talk about her books, her process and what inspires her.

J: The  books I’m most familiar with are the Neumarian Chronicles, your steampunk YA series.  What inspired you to write YA novels, and why steampunk in particular?

CK: I love the freedom.  There are no real boundaries for my imagination.  I’m a FAR right brainer,  so my gifts lie on the story part of my writing. I'll admit, I didn't set out to write any steampunk, even though I'm a fan, it just sort of happened. When I started writing Escapement, book I of The Neumarian Chronicles, the story took over. It ended up with elements of cyberpunk, biopunk, steampunk, diesel punk and more.
Picture
As for YA, I love the edgy, dark side yet the innocence of a first romance. It's so powerful.
J:  I know you’ve written more than just the Neumarian Chronicles – how many books have you published?

CK:   By February 14th, I’ll have twelve full-length novels published.
J:  Can you give us a brief synopsis of your most recent series?

CK:  The most recent series is a sweet romance line, Sweetwater County. Although, it is my number one selling series, I think I'll discuss my upcoming release, The Shrouded Kingdoms.  There are seven books planned for this series. The first three are up for pre-order on Amazon. Book I, The Curse of Gremdon, was originally published through a small press, but due to reader demand, I'm re-releasing it and adding to the series.
Picture
Book I, The Curse of Gremdon: In a world where marriage is forbidden, sex is only granted to male warriors, and the outer realm is full of murderous creatures, Arianna fights to protect the life of her only living relative, her brother.

Tardon, an elite warrior, is granted anything he desires by the Elders, but finds little joy in the voluptuous women presented to him. Born for the bloodlust found only in battle, complicated emotions emerge when he discovers his equal in the alluring warrior, Arianna.

Charged by the Elders with saving the castle from attack, Tardon and Arianna risk the curse when they traverse the vast outer realm to retrieve serum from the Tree of Life. If successful, the Elders have promised Tardon the right to marry and Arianna the cure for her brother's death fever. Will their love carry them through or will the discovery of a great deception be their ultimate demise?

Book II, The Secrets of Dargon, is scheduled to be released in September 2015, and Book III, will be titled The Runes of Brannon.
J: I know you do a lot of work promoting your books.  How many different cons or other events do you attend each year?

CK:  It varies from year to year. In 2015, I'll be attending AnachroCon, Authors After Dark, Romantic Times, Dragon Con and UtopYA. I'll be a featured author and/or guest at each of these event. I love doing these events because I'm able to meet readers and chat about my favorite subject, books!

J: Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

CK: I’m a geek at heart. I grew up watching Star Trek in the afternoons, standing in lines for Star Wars, and never missed an episode of Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, or any other sci-fi show available. I'm most at home when I'm cosplaying at Dragon Con.  I hope some of you will stop by one of my panels this year to say hi!

Check out Ciara Knight on her blog, Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, and Amazon.

New Life in Fraggle Rock Movie Project

There has been talk for years about bringing back The Fraggles.

With the success of the two Muppet movies, bringing back our beloved characters to the new generation it seems a natural move.
The project has languished for a while, but has today received some new blood - from Joseph Gordon-Levitt! Signing on as producer and star, Levitt brings the project one step closer to reality...
“The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock,'” Gordon-Levitt said. “Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”

iZombie - Is it worth the watch?

I am a Marshmallow - that is to say I am a HUGE Veronica Mars fan.

So to hear that there is a new Rob Thomas show, on the CW, which hosts some of my very favorite shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supernatural.) I was more than intrigued. To see it was about a zombie that solves crimes, I was a bit more dubious.

But I watched it - and here's what I thought...
Picture
Oh look, Veronica Mars meets Warm Bodies meets Tru Calling. Hmmm...
The pilot episode is a solid OKAY. I will give it another shot to see if it evolves into something a bit more original as they go beyond the origin story. It is based on a comic book, so I've got to hope there is more to it.

So here's the basic plot. Olivia Moore (get it "Live More") is an up-and-coming heart surgeon who is struggling for acceptance by her peers during her hospital residency. She has a great career, loving family, and the perfect fiancee. She gets invited to a party on a boat by the hospital's version of the popular kids (or 0-9ers if you are a Marshmallow.) There are mysterious 'designer drugs' at the party that turns people into zombies and mayhem ensues. Olivia is scratched while trying to flee the 'burning boat of murder.'  Wakes up in a body bag on the beach - like you do.
Picture
Cut to six months later. She is the only survivor of what the police and media only think of as the boat massacre (no mention of the Z-word at all.) Her best friend, family, and now ex-fiancee stage an intervention. They think Liv is suffering from PTSD and is throwing away her life by leaving the hospital to go work in the coroner's office and generally withdrawing from the world (also that pale skin and white hair look is very unflattering dear...) and breaking it off with Mr. Perfect.
Of course we know she is a zombie and the coroner's office is a great place to get brains without killing anyone - but she isn't as sneaky as she thinks and her boss catches on to her condition. As a former CDC researcher, he wants to study and cure her in return for a steady supply of 'food' from the morgue.
Picture
Then there is the main plot device - when she eats the brains, she gets the person's memories, habits and skills along with it. So, she posses as a psychic to help a down-on-his-luck detective solve a murder - and finds her purpose in life. or unlife. or undeath - well, you get the picture.

The whole show has the noir-style inner monologue that made VMars popular - and hell, star Rose McIver sounds almost exactly like her. Oh, and to add a bit of a super-hero element she can kind of 'hulk-out' and go uber-zombie badass when angered.
Picture
I just can't shake the fact that I've seen this show before. I know nothing is truly original - so this show will live and die on the charm of its cast and the richness of its mythology. I just hope it doesn't take more than a few episodes to come into its own...

Moffat explains the Sherlock Special Costumes

3/16/2015

So, we've all seen the set photos of Sherlock and John in period clothing - will the Christmas special take place at a costume party? Is that Doctor Who-Lock crossover finally happening? Is it an acid-trip dream sequence?
Picture
Well, wonder no more! (Well, slightly less...) For Moffat has made this statement to Entertainment Weekly...
“The special is its own thing,” Moffat told EW before attending a panel at the South by Southwest conference on Monday. “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”
The 90-minute episode is finished filming, but will not premiere until the holidays. When we have a date, you all will be the first to know!

So what do you think? A stand-alone ramdom episode just so we can see them in Victorian costumes? Hmmm....

Star Wars News

We all have our collective count down clocks going for the release of the new Star Wars movie Episode VII: The Force Awakens...
Picture
But now we can start our countdown clocks for Episode VIII - because yesterday Disney announced its release on May 26th, 2017!  The movie will also be written and directed by Rian Johnson.
For those of you who don't know, Episide IV: A New Hope - the original Star Wars - was released on May 25th, 1977 - so this looks to be a massive (almost) 40th Anniversary Release!
Picture
In addition, Disney announced the first of the stand-alone Star Wars features - Rogue One.
Little is known about his new title, but it will star Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything).
Here is what starwars.com has to say...
Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything.

The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

Rumor Has It... More Suicide Squad Casting

3/12/2015

There are rumblings today that Joe Manganiello is close to signing a deal to join the star-studded Suicide Squad movie. The role hasn't been disclosed, but we are hearing he may be the film's Slade Wilson, AKA Deathstroke.

Though why you would want to cover up all of him in body armor and a mask is way beyond me...
Picture
Picture
Also, a few days ago, producers confirmed the new casting for team leader Rick Flagg after Tom Hardy left the production a few months ago. The role has gone to Joel Kinnaman, who most notable starred in last year's reboot of Robocop. There is also a rumor going around that they are looking at Ed Harris to play his dad, Rick Flagg, Sr.
