Throwback Thursday - My First Hulk

The Incredible Hulk has always been one of my favorite superheroes.  Big, green, angry – what’s not to love?  But my love of the Hulk was born before I discovered comic books (though Hulk titles have been published on and off since May 1962), and certainly long before Mark Ruffalo made Bruce Banner so adorable.

My first Hulk was Lou Ferrigno.  And they say you never forget your first Doctor, but I’ve never forgotten my first Hulk!

I was four years old when the television series debuted on CBS in 1978, and quite honestly I’m surprised my parents let me watch that kind of show - I suppose I have my father, who was himself somewhat geeky, to thank, as he’d already begun sharing his love of Star Trek (the Original Series, of course) with me by then.  I can still hear the opening of the show, in the voice of Ted Cassidy:
“Dr. David Banner: physician; scientist. Searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have. Then an accidental overdose of gamma radiation alters his body chemistry. And now when David Banner grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs. The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter. The creature is wanted for a murder he didn't commit. David Banner is believed to be dead, and he must let the world think that he is dead, until he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him.”

Binge-Watch Wednesdays - Farscape

It is that time of year again.  It happens every summer... binge watching Farscape!

Why is this show so appealing 10 years after it ended?  I think the simplest way I’ve heard Farscape  described is as “strangers in a lifeboat.”  The show was very different for its time, and seemed to fill the void for fans who really missed Babylon 5 (another topic for another day!).

The premise is that John Crichton ( the only human on the show) is from present-day Earth and is pulled through a wormhole into another part of the galaxy.  If that isn’t bad enough, he is “rescued” by an escaped prison ship that is being run by fugitives. The only common goal they share is to evade capture.

Featured today - Magic Breaks by Illona Andrews

This is the 7th book in the Kate Daniels series. The premise of the books is that magic once ruled over the Earth before 'science' took over. A few years ago, the world broke - creating periods on time where magic seeps through reality and technology no longer works. In this world magical creatures and races are part of what is left of humanity.

In modern-day Atlanta, GA (or what's left of it) lives Kate Daniels. Mercenary, peacekeeper, private eye, and secret daughter of the most dangerous demon lord in North America.

She is a pretty kick-ass heroine with much sword and magic battles, and also has a pretty tawdry courtship and romance with the leader of the shifters, the were-lion Curran.

Andrews has created such an interesting world that she has a series of romance novels based here (the The Edge series) and one spin-off book about Kate's best friend, Andrea, called Gunmetal Magic.

If you enjoy a side of romance with your urban fantasy, check out this series. If you already know its pretty great, check out the newest book!

So, it's over. San Diego Comic Con and NerdHQ 2014 are now in the history books (and by that, I mean archived forever on the internet.) I spent most of the last four days glued to the internet to watch as many panels and clips and previews as they could post.

Someday I hope to make a pilgrimage to this holy nerd Mecca, but until then there is something to be said for being able to live to vicariously through YouTube in the comfort of my PJs at home!

Not every media group has released their panels to the internet yet (I'm looking at you DC/WB...) so we will continue to bring you these links as they come out. Also, we'll be doing a look back on cosplay at the Con later in the week.

But here are my top 5(ish) moments from SDCC (that I got to see on the internet...)

1. Stephen Amell's abs... enough said.

2. This impromptu fashion shoot with the stars of GoT (on Pedro Pascal's Instagram)

3. The Orphan Black cast at "Conversations for a Cause" at Nerd HQ. They were told hilarious and amazing stories about the show - oh and Dylan Bruce (Paul) talked Kristian Bruun (Donnie) into joining the "butt club" by dropping his pants during the panel!
See the whole thing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2Gvn8V5tzs

4. The constant beaming grin on Gwendoline Christie's face through out the whole con, but especially when she talked about her 'big fight' during the GoT panel in Hall H. (It is no wonder why she was invited to the TV Guide fan favorite panel too!

5. The Avengers: Age of Ultron panel! You can so tell these guys really have fun together. I just hope we get to see the teaser footage soon!

BONUS... Closing out the weekend was the Supernatural "Conversations for a Cause" at NerdHQ. Here's the whole thing. I have no words. The questions are a bit ridiculous, but they are so awesome and funny, and you can tell that they've all gone completely silly from a very, very, very long weekend at Con.

Ok. So, my 'type' (if there is such a thing) is semi-famous nerdy guys who use their celebrity for charity. And wears Chuck Taylors. And is also a Disney prince. And a Broadway star. And is incredibly handsome and funny.

So.... Meet Zachary Levi.

He is one of the Kings of SDCC. In fact, he runs a very special Con-within-a-Con
called NerdHQ.

Picture
He established his adorable nerd credit playing IT guy turned super-spy on the cult favorite, Chuck. He also voiced (and sang) the part of Flynn Rider in Disney's Tangled. Last year he was on Broadway with his musical, First Date.

Being nerdy just means being passionate about something, including everyone - the coolest people on Earth are passionate and therefore nerdy about something whatever it is, whether it's sports, or gaming, or technology, or fashion, or beauty, or food, or whatever. - Zachary Levi

Binge Watch Wednesday - Teen Wolf

I was initially put off watching Teen Wolf by the show title. I imagined characters that were angsty ratcheted high school students, and I decided the show was not for me. Thankfully several online friends raved about the show enough that I decided to binge watch the first two seasons over a weekend. I was so wrong!!
Picture
Teen Wolf is centered around Scott McCall’s life as he moves from awkward teen to werewolf. Throughout season 1 Scott starts to develop what I affectionately call his Scooby Gang (similar dynamics to BTVS). It combines comedy, action, drama and supernatural for a well written show. The characters have developed every season.
Characters I mistrusted in Season 1 were growing on me by Season 2, and I might have hated them again by Season 3. My favorite character so far is Stiles, the goofy sidekick. He is adorable. This show also panders to its audience as many of the male cast tend to find themselves shirtless (this doesn’t bother me) due to various reasons...

Teen Wolf is now in its fourth season on MTV. Seasons 1-3 can be found on Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus, and you can find Season 4 on Xfinity On Demand and MTV.COM. I dare you to watch the first three episodes and not be hooked!

This week's feature:
Poison Promise by Jennifer Estep

The Elemental Assassin books are a great urban fantasy series for anyone who likes kick-ass heroines with a passion for southern cooking, classic literature and murder-for-hire.

Book 11 of this series promises to bring more of the fire vs ice, stone vs air epic power battles and mob-style supernatural underworld drama that readers of this series have come to expect (with never a small body count!)

5 Reasons why Tom Hiddleston has Ruined Me for All Other Men
by Joelle

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar – Educated at Eton College, Cambridge (where he earned a double first in Classics), and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Tom is as intelligent as he is handsome. As much as I love the silly interviews my favorite tend to involve Tom using that fantastic mind to discuss any number of topics.
One example is this interview from a British political show where he debates modern politics and how they relate to Shakespeare’s Henry V:
