It's New Year's  - so every sci-fi fan knows what that means... Twilight Zone marathon on SyFy channel!

What you may not know however is that Showtime is also marathoning the first season of Penny Dreadful.
Picture
If you didn't watch it the first time around, ask yourself these questions:
  • Do you like classic movie monsters or gothic horror fiction?
  • Do you love Victorian era costume dramas?
  • Have you watched other OMG, WTF, gratuitous, sexy-time shows like AHS, GoT, Rome, Sparticus, Camelot or Outlander?
  • How much do you love Eva Green?

Then you may want to check out Penny Dreadful.
Methodically paced and mysterious, this Gothic thriller is a call back to the days of vampires being bloody villains, dark parlor tarot readings, violent possession, and literary icons such as Frankenstein, his Monster and Dorian Grey come to painful and bloody life.

The cornerstone of the show is Eva Green's knock-out performance as the tortured mistress of the arcane, Vanessa Ives. All 8 episodes are worth a watch but her performance in episode 7, Possession is worthy of nominations.

The show has been renewed for a second season, though the release date has yet to be announced. So get on board now and enjoy the twists and turns of Penny Dreadful!

TBT - Our Favorite TV Holiday Specials!

12/18/2014

MEGHAN:
As a kid, my favorite part of the holiday season was camping out by the TV and watching Christmas specials nonstop. From the classics of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Charlie Brown Christmas, and Frosty the Snowman to all the schlocky specials of the time like A Garfield Christmas and The Little Troll Prince, I watched them all in a Christmas-cookie-fueled haze. I even indulged during off-season airings. I don't marathon shows in my adult years (which makes me a bit of a rarity) but for Christmas specials, I'll make an exception!

Remember this?...

LAUREN:
I always favored the old Rankin & Bass stop-motion Christmas classics, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Rudolph's Shiny New Year.

But, as much as I love those classics, the Christmas specials I look forward to these days are Disney's Prep & Landing and its sequels! I love the concept, the characters and Pixar's animation - I wish they'd make more!
Picture
ARIYANNA:
I agree with you Lauren. Now that we can see the older specials just about any time, it's the new things coming out that get my attention such as the new Christmas special on NBC, Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas featuring a bunch of top notch voice actors like Mark Hamill, Jim Parsons, and Rachael MacFarlane - just to name a few. If you missed it, you can still catch it here on NBC.com

JEN:
TV specials! I love the old ones - Charlie Brown Christmas and the 1966 How the Grinch Stole Christmas (love Boris Karloff!) have always been my favorites. I'm generally cynical about the newer specials, but Prep & Landing never fails to make me smile - and Betty White has a cameo as Mrs. Claus in the second one (Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice).
What is your favorite TV Holiday special?

Wednesday Whispers

Fresh from this week's rumor mill...
It looks like Viola Davis has taken the lead as the Suicide Squad's Amanda Waller - I like this better than the earlier Oprah rumors...
Picture
Based on some comments from Tim Burton, there may be a Beetlejuice 2 in the works - with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder on board - not sure how I feel about this. Sometimes you just don't need a sequel...
Neal Gaiman has made comments that he would love to see Tom Hiddleston play Morpheus in the new Joseph Gordon-Levitt helmed Sandman movie - and reddit just exploded...
Picture
Also in the 'beloved childhood movies that do not need sequels' category, Ghostbusters 3's all-female cast rumors are still swirling with names like, Lizzy Caplan, Rebel Wilson, and Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone in the mix. I love the idea a women Ghostbusters, but do we need this, really? So we?
Picture
Aside from last week's rumors about Jonathan Frakes being interested at taking the helm of Star Trek 3, Deadline reports the the lead contenders for the director's chair are: Rupert Wyatt (RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES), Morten Tyldum (THE IMITATION GAME), Daniel Espinosa (SAFE HOUSE), Justin Lin (many FAST AND THE FURIOUS films), and Duncan Jones (MOON, SOURCE CODE).

This Thursday's Throwback is about our favorite Christmas movies...
LAUREN:
I'm not sentimental at the holidays - my favorite Christmas movie is Die Hard.

(Scrooged is a close second.)

MEGHAN:
YES!  Scrooged!

MISS SALLY:
The Star Wars Christmas Special - JUST KIDDING!

It's Home Alone!

Picture
HEATHER:
Miracle on 34the Street - but my favorite 'geeky' Christmas movie is Gremlins!
(Thanks, Lindsey, for reminding me it is a Christmas movie!)

ARIYANNA:
I love A Christmas Story. My holidays are not complete unless I've seen it at least a couple (dozen) times.

Mostly I'm a traditionalist at heart and reserve Christmas movies for this time of year... but I do also like the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton.

LINDSEY:
I'm all about non traditional Christmas movies! Rocky IV goes along with Die Hard... I also like While You Were Sleeping & Go.
Picture

There are the typical 'Top 10 traditional Christmas movies,' but it's way more fun to think of odd ones that take place at Christmas. Last year I watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang at Christmas, and Batman Returns is always a good geeky Christmas choice!

JEN:
While You Were Sleeping and Love Actually - I'm a sucker for holiday rom-coms apparently!

Picture
Ooh, and Muppet Christmas Carol is awesome too! That's my favorite one to watch with the kids.
ANNIE:
I am also partial to the Muppet Christmas Carol. I love the rats - and it has so many! We also watch A Christmas Story marathon on Christmas day.

Binge Watch Wednesdays - A Very Special Holiday Edition!

One possibility is to watch the holiday episodes!

Many times the holiday episodes are independent of any season story arcs, and can be watched out of order without the watcher getting completely lost.

I look forward every holiday season to the Doctor Who specials.  Grimm is becoming known for having a yearly dark holiday special and I can never forget A Very Supernatural Christmas !

Below, I’ve pulled together just a few of my favorite holiday specials from these shows.

What are some of your favorite TV holiday episodes?

Today's Highlight:
Into the Woods: Stephen Sondheim

Before the new feature film version of this (my favorite) musical comes out in a few weeks, here is the remastered original stage production from 1991. I had this on VHS and wore. it. out.

Originally shown on PBS, this beautiful and charming Broadway hit is perfectly filmed and performed on stage by the original Tony award winning cast.

Cyber-Monday Mourning

12/1/2014

Some of us (Lindsey & Heather) braved the challenge of Black Friday shopping, and some of us huddled for warmth in our turkey comas, counting the hours for Cyber Monday.

There are a few hours left (most sales end at midnight) so here are some of the places we have gotten deals online today...
Picture
Jen:
I'm traveling today, so I've not had much time for shopping, but I know The Oatmeal has their hilarious 'horrible greeting cards' 30% off today and other items on sale too!
- Heather, did you see the Klingon blood wine on sale at startrek.com?

Heather:
I'll have to check there, because ThinkGeek is sold out of most of their Star Trek stuff! I did find a new Autobots badge for my car on Amazon, It's not on sale, but a good price anyway!

Picture
Picture
Annie:
I shopped several sites but my favorite things were from woot.com. I bought my husband a sweatshirt and I got two shirts, and woot mini plushies - I hope at least one of them is the fat unicorn!
