There’s no doubt Steven Moffat has ruffled feathers with his Dr. Who decisions over the years. While I’ve been critical of many of his recent writing decisions, Moffat has unlocked my giddy fangirl psyche with the casting of Scottish actress Michelle Gomez as The Master.
I can’t say it enough: Michelle Gomez is nothing short of BRILLIANT!

Yes, I am partial to many things Scotland, but that isn’t why I have a sudden girl crush on The Mistress. Gomez brings back the wacky-but-ferocious evil genius we saw in John Simm, but while he projected pure insanity and narcissism, Gomez’s Master is beguiling, reptilian and deliciously cunning.
In her interviews, Gomez is as much fun as her character, Missy. Her sense of humor and joie de vivre shine through in this BBC recap of the Dr. Who season 8 finale.

Michelle Gomez has that inner fire that sets the great actors apart from the rest. She makes a fantastic villain, but it’s easy to see she would rock comedic and dramatic roles equally well. I have yet to see her British TV work, but it will be next on my to-watch list.
Here’s a Youtube video of some of her standup comedy (very NSFW and strong language, ho!).

I know, every time The Master dies, he/she mysteriously regenerates into a different body, but still… I’ll be waiting for the return of Gomez’s Missy!
