Binge-Watch Wednesdays focuses on new and old TV shows that we are rabidly devouring at an alarming rate.
I'm not sure why I didn't watch Veronica Mars when it originally ran from 2004-2007. Maybe it was because it was on the UPN/CW or because I thought it was just another high school teeny-bopper drama.
But earlier this year something amazing happened. Fans brought it back. Using Kickstarter, regular people quickly funded the making of a feature film to revive these beloved characters.
As a student of film & TV, I had to acknowledge the incredible precedent this set for people to choose with their dollars to hold on to the shows they love. Network executives be damned. I felt this was an important thing to support, even though I'd never seen the show.

Shortly before the release of the film, Amazon Prime began steaming the series, so I buckled down to do my homework. Ten minutes into the first episode, I was hooked. The gritty, noir voice-over lays out a no-holds barred sketch of Veronica and the very serious, adult issues she is dealing with in her life. Rather than falling apart, it has made her tough and fearless (some would also say reckless) and she stands up for herself and others. A true role model for the "don't let the bastards get you down" mentality.
Veronica may be a teen-aged private detective, but Nancy Drew she is not. Kristen Bell is amazing. Her humor, intensity, and obvious love of the character transcends high school tropes and becomes something more. Each episode has a 'case of the week' quality, while always connecting to the over-arching mystery of the season - with plenty of shockers, twists, snark, social commentary and epic romance to keep you bingeing into the wee hours of the morning.
I am currently on my 3rd round through on this series since March. Needless to say, "People might say I'm a marshmallow."

BTW - The movie is awesome, and there is one novel already out, Thousand Dollar Tan Line, that picks up after the movie for when you are left wanting more, AND a second novel, Mr. Kiss and Tell, set for release on October 28th 2014!
