The show centers around a group of misfit characters that survive together on the Serenity, a Firefly-class starship. Creator Joss Whedon describes Firefly as “nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things.”

The basic premise is that this group is made up of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and a few others who are living on the borders of society. The two only remaining superpowers are the USA and China who merged together to form a government called the Alliance. In this universe “nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral and ethical problems as today.” The only way to escape Alliance control is to live amongst the planets on the fringe of the galaxy - wild, nearly lawless, and dangerous places.

With that background in mind, here are a few reasons you must watch this show:
For those (few) who haven’t seen Firefly yet, it is a must see show!

Why? Well here are a few good reasons there will always be loyal browncoats everywhere in the 'Verse.

It lasted less than one season but has managed to maintain an active cult following over 10+ years. Fans, show runners and the cast loved the show so much, they rallied enough support (pre-Kickstarter) to get a feature film made in 2005, Serenity.

1. Strong Female Characters
Joss Whedon has been asked multiple times “Why do you always write such strong female characters?” and his response is “Because you are still asking me that question."
Picture
Kaylee - Mechanic who is sweet and wholesome with a natural talent for ship maintenance and repair.

River -  Mysterious child prodigy that escaped with the help of her brother from a government-run "special school."  She is somewhat psychotic, definitely dangerous, and isolated.  One of my favorite quotes from her is “I can kill you with my brain”.

Zoe - Fierce and loyal to the Captain.  Zoe fought on the losing side of the civil war against the Alliance.

Inara – the Companion - a well-respected, high-class prostitute who enjoys her job and isn’t ashamed of what she does.

2. Chinese Swearing
This is hilarious.  When I originally watched the show, I had no idea what was being said.  Of course, with a quick search of Google, we can find some of the translations such as  “Holy Testicle Tuesday” and “Frog-humping son of a bitch!” Really, what more do you need?

3.  This show was funny!
See the number two reason as an example.  Or take a look at some of the other quotes from the show below:

If someone tries to kill you, you go on and try and kill 'em right back.
4. Nathan Fillion
Not sure what else to say about Captain Tightpants!

5.  Joss Whedon

It was created, written and directed by Joss Whedon.  JOSS WHEDON!  Who brought us Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, Dollhouse, The Cabin in The Woods, and the frickn' Avengers.

You can actually watch this whole series and the movie in one day!

Jayne!
The man they call Jayne!
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now, ain't hard to explain,
The hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!
Now Jayne saw the Mudders' backs breakin'.
He saw the Mudders' lament.
And he saw that magistrate takin'
Every dollar and leavin' five cents.
So he said, "You can't do that to my people!"
"You Can't, crush them under your heel."
Jayne strapped on his hat,
And in five seconds flat,
Stole everything Boss Higgins had to steal.
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain,
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne.
Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I.
The man they call Jayne,
He turned 'round his plane,
And let that money hit sky.
He dropped it onto our houses.
He dropped it into our yards.
The man they call Jayne
He turned round his plane,
And headed out for the stars.
Here we go!
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now ain't hard to explain,
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!
