How much you spent isn't what people will remember years later - it is that you listened, cared and created a memory for someone that will stand the test of time!
This week's favorite gift story comes from Ariyanna...
Jump into your Delorean and travel back in time with me to Christmas morning 1983...
I was 11 years old and Christmas still held it's magical mystery to me. Ok, yes I knew about the real Santa (no spoilers here kids!) but each Christmas morning was always a surprise as to what my younger brother, sister and I would find waiting for us under the tree. On this particular year, as we awoke and meandered into the living room to the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree and the soft sounds of Bing Crosby singing carols on the radio, we wiped the visions of sugar plums from our eyes and beheld our family's first pc computer sitting on the piano bench.
The crisp whiteness of it's plastic frame stood out starkly from the colorfully wrapped presents still under the tree. Squeals of delight rang out throughout the house to wake my mom from her few hours of sleep. We were so excited!
Mom had sat up all night installing all of the software so it was ready to go when we all sat down to take in the glow of the monitor and pushed the power button as the green cursor prompt flickered to life on the screen.

That began our journey into family gaming and was for many years a large part of our family times shared together. We spent numerous of hours playing adventure games such as King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest - nearly all of the Sierra line of games. Through the years we learned to write our own programs for the computer and it became my social outlet - far before Facebook was even imagined. Often times it was a fight between being online to chat with my friends on the local bbs and mom needing the telephone line for business. |
This gift truly transformed and influenced our lives in ways that I cannot even imagine without it. It was the greatest gift at that time. It was a rare thing, kind of like when people talk about getting one of the first color TV's - if you can image that.
