Tabletop gaming is awesome friend-gathering fun where hilarity usually ensues. | by Lauren Gisel My tabletop gaming experience never went much past Clue, various trivia games and the Game of Life (which I have never won - BTW...) It's one aspect of geeky culture that has always eluded me - mostly from lack of friends who wanted to play - and I have always found it intimidating to learn new, crazy games when everyone else seems to already know how. But all that's changed! There are some serious game masters in my geeky circle of friends, and they have been introducing me to new types of gaming experiences. Their gaming shelves are as full and varied as my book and movie rooms! After joining in on a few game nights - and of course, International Tabletop Gaming Day - I've learned I shouldn't have been afraid! Tabletop gaming is awesome friend-gathering fun where hilarity usually ensues. |

In this semi-regular column, I plan to provide a new-comers view to tabletop games (other veteran GG Inc, gamers will have their own columns for the already initiated.)
This week's game is The Monty Python Edition of the card game FLUXX!
This week's game is The Monty Python Edition of the card game FLUXX!
This is a great introduction to card-based tabletop games, because the only (starting) rule is, "Draw a card, Play a card." After that, the rules, goals, trophy and obstacle cards all pop up, stack and change as you go along! For instance, one round someone played a rule card that said you have to talk in a funny accent during your turn - to get bonus card plays, you had to stay in character the whole time! This was really funny the more people got in to it - then someone played a card that ended that rule. Simple as that.
How to win the game changes every time someone puts down a new 'Goal' card, so you had to watch carefully which "keepers" you (and other players) have so you know if you're the winner - or if you've given the game away. It is a new game every time!
This Monty Python-themed set was more funny to those of us who love the classic British comedy troupe, but accessible to all players. There are many other versions of FLUXX sets out there - and easily available (you can get some sets at Target now.) Very good for families and friends! I look forward to playing it again and again!
