It’s almost Halloween, and what better way to amp up the excitement than by playing a game about candy? You might be too old to trick-or-treat, but you can relive your doorbell ringing days guilt-free by playing Costume Quest, a game about everyone’s favorite Halloween festivities. To add to the authenticity, I recommend playing with a pumpkin pail full of candy.
In Costume Quest, you play as a feisty trick-or-treater whose poorly-costumed twin has been kidnapped by monsters. In order to avoid getting in big trouble, you must trick-or-treat at every house in order to find them. Battle fearsome enemies in traditional RPG style-- luckily, your cardboard costume becomes “real” during the fight. The combat gets harder as you go along, but never frustrating, and you’ll gain friends as party members along the way.
The game is simple and charming, and even though the battle animations are repetitive, I never got tired of them (probably since I grew up in the era of over-the-top JRPG cutscene excess). There are plenty of side-quests, including crashing a party and bobbing for apples. There’s even a costume contest!
Many of the costumes assembled along the way have a special ability, so there are a few puzzles to solve for all of you adventure game fans. Be sure to find the hidden secrets and finish those quests for all of the good stuff. There are plenty of jokes scattered in the game world and dialogue, so it’s definitely worth your while to explore.
Costume Quest isn’t too long, so you can easily play at least most of it in time for the big day. There’s also a sequel if you need even MORE Halloween this year. Both games are currently on sale for less than a bag of candy, so now’s your time to snatch it up!
Hitting everyone and everything with my candy bag,
