There are quite a few NON-Superhero flix in our future to get excited about. Here is a not-so-short list of some movies our our must-see list this year. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Who doesn't want to return to JK Rowling's magical wold? We couldn't be more excited for more Wizarding World this year (except if we lived in London where we could go see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play.) Set to release this November. Ghostbusters Despite the 'all-female-cast' hulabaloo (which should be a non-issue), we are SUPER STOKED for this sequel/reboot of one of our all-time favorite movies. If someone asks you if you want to see the new Ghostbusters - You say YES! Premieres July 15, 2016. Star Trek: Beyond As a rare non-hater of the JJ Abrams reboot series, I am wicked pumped for the newest installment of the series. The Beasty Boys heavy first trailer met with mixed reviews, but I cannot wait to Boldly Go the the theaters for this one on July 8th 2016! Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Not a ton is known about this first SW anthology film, but with another strong female lead (Felicity Jones) we are all in on this heist-style flick. Runor has it the story takes place before the events of Episode IV, and focuses on the group of rebels that steal the plans for the first Death Star that ultimately find their way into R2-D2... Releases December 16, 2016 The Jungle Book Blown away by the spectacular visuals of the trailer and the all-star line up of voice actors, we can't help but be intrigued by this latest attempt to bring the childhood classic to the big screen in a live action format. Debuts April 15, 2016. The Huntsman: Winter’s War This Snow-Whiteless sequel is made wildly appealing by the glorious return of Charlize's Evil Queen and the new addition of Jessica Chastain and the always fantastic Emily Blunt. Oh yeah, and the glorious smirk of that Chris Hemsworth guy. Releases April 22, 2016. Honorable Mentions We've already shared our excitement for Kubo and the Two Strings, but we are also intrigued to see the Pixar sequel Finding Dory, set for release on June 17, 2016. We are also embarrassingly enthusiastic for the potential disaster that is World of Warcraft. We are also keeping an eye on two sequels - the final installment of the Divergent Series: Allegiant and the way long overdue Independence Day follow-up which surprised us all with a stunning trailer over the holidays.

Each year since Ironman, Hollywood has upped the ante for blockbuster comicbook films - but this year may take the cake. There are so many this year, we had to separate them out from all the other movies we want to see next year (which we will cover tomorrow.) Captain America: Civil War This might as well be called Avengers 3: This Time it's Personal. This movie is so big and cast-packed Marvel bought back Spiderman to be in it! We are so in. Premieres on May 6, 2016 - AKA not soon enough. Doctor Strange Entertainment Weekly just released the first official pictures of the Cumberbatch in full regalia - and despite some odd casting choices, I am seriously interested on how they are going to bring 'Serious Magic' into what has been a fairly science-heavy MCU. Set for release November 4th, 2016. DEADPOOL Keep the kiddos at home for this one, we finally get an R-rated comicbook movie brought to you by your friendly neighborhood Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds has committed HARD to being all things Wade Wilson, and if the new (NSFW) trailer is any indication it is going to be a bloody, raunchy, raucous good time. Out February 12th! X-Men: Apocalypse Another series chock-full of characters is the coming X-Men Apocalypse. Some excellent young cast additions gives me hope for this one, including the awesome Sophie Turner as Jean Grey. Also, BALD young Professor X, finally! Set as a Memorial Day tentpole. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice I personally have mixed feelings on this one, not due to the Batfleck - I'm actually fine with that - it's Jessie Eisenberg's Lex Luthor that has my Spidey-sense tingling on this one. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way I'll be ready to see Wonder Woman kick ass when it releases on March 25th. Suicide Squad Before the big DC superhero team up hits the big screens with the Justice League in 2017, the DC villains have #squadgoals - and all eyes will be on Jared Leto's Joker, even with the enormous cast of heavy hitters. Out August 5th.
With the post Holidays/post Star Wars blues in full swing, it's time to look ahead to 2016 - which is shaping up to be a mega-year for all things geek. In part one, we look to new and seasonally returning television shows to watch out for. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride New Year's Day. 'nuff said. The X-Files The six episode mini-series revivial of one of the all time greats starts Sunday, January 24! If you are into spoilers, EW has a 21-minute sneak preview here. DC's Legends of Tomorrow This 16-episode series is a spin-off of the fantastic CW Arrow and Flash franchises. Premieres January 21st! The Shannara Chronicles MTV tries its hand at a fantasy series that might be a bit more family-friendly than GoT. If the trailers are any indication, this could be GOOD. Premieres January 5th. The Magicians Syfy ran a sneaky preview of the first episode a week ago, which I've seen and I have to say it is really quite good and visually stunning. I've read the books, but any fan of Magic should give this one a chance. (Not for younger viewers.) Premieres officially on January 25th. Honorable Mentions Game of Thrones returns for season 6 on HBO on April 24, 2016. Also, Netflix should have Daredevil Season 2, Luke Cage and season 2 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt sometime in 2016 - we'll keep you posted when dates are released. UPDATE: Netflix announced season 2 of Daredevil will be released for your bingeing pleasure on March 25th! And, of course, Orphan Black season 4 coming this spring! by Lauren (Spoiler free does not mean emotion free, so consider yourselves warned) I saw it Saturday Night. Other GGs saw it opening day, others still haven't seen it. The craziness around the pre-sale made it difficult for us all to go together. But we had a massive chat about it yesterday, and everyone left the movie with a different opinion, favorite part, pet peeve and/or life changing experience. (Personally, I'm still not 100% sure how I feel about it.) However, there were three things we could all completely agree on. 1. See it.See it big and loud and 3D and Imax and all the things! It is beautiful. The visuals are amazingly stunning, the action is engrossing, detailed and enthralling. The music and sound is as sweeping and epic as you remember. 2. See it a second time. Now this isn't pandering to the hype machine - we bailed from that a month ago. This is for practical reasons. The experience of "FINALLY SEEING STAR WARS" can be so overwhelming, it is really hard to take in the whole film. No longer measured against hype and unrealistic expectations, you can see all the details and enjoy the movie for what it is the second time - a damned fine adventure. and 3. Daisy Ridley as Rey is a revelation.I won't say anything specific about her character, but Rey is THE hero for a new generation of children (and giddy adults). She is strong, kind and unwaveringly determined. She is smart, loyal and fiercely independent. Gone is the hesitant or reluctant hero trope. She takes it a runs - because it is the right thing to do. Following her journey through these movies will be a true joy for years to come. (I'm sure even implying that she lives is technically a spoiler, but y'all can stuff it.) So that's it. That's our review. Make up your own mind - I'm sure people will be debating this to death for years to come.
Now start the countdown to Star Wars: Rogue One... Entertainment Weekly gets all the good stuff! Today, they released these awesome character posters for the new Ghostbusters movie set for Summer blockbuster relase! Aw, Yass!
"An epic action-adventure from acclaimed animation studio LAIKA. Clever, kindhearted Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson of “Game of Thrones”) ekes out a humble living, telling fantastical stories to the people of his seaside town. But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a mythical spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Academy Award winner Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey), and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. With the help of his shamisen – a magical musical instrument – Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King (Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) and the evil twin Sisters (Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara), to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and his heroic destiny. The all-star cast also includes George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Brenda Vaccaro."

Despite the mixed reviews in the bloggosphere, Supergirl has been quality family-friendly superhero fair - which IMHO is much needed with all of the darker, grittier hero shows out there. Don't get me wrong, I love those too, but I wouldn't share them with my 8 year old niece, but I would watch Supergirl with her. I've read several blogs lately saying how lame she is compared to Jessica Jones - which to me is an utterly ridiculous comparison - in that there is no comparison. One is clearly for adults, one is for families. There is room for both.
So, I am glad that Supergirl got a full season order from CBS. I just hope they cool it with the love triangle and make with more alien bad guy butt kicking! "We LOOOOOOOOOVE Michelle Gomez - Seriously, we Fangirl over her.
She is the very best part of the current Doctor's run on Doctor Who. She is a masterful "Master" - but did you know she will also be Gotham's "Lady?" With all the villains appearing this season, she would make a delicious addition to the criminal pantheon. She leaked the info herself on Twitter a few weeks ago, but tonight is the night! (Seriously loving that hair and tie!Nothing but class...) We'll be tuning in for sure. |
