Monday Morning 'Coffee Talk'

So you are virtually standing around the break room, still half waking up to start a new week.  Rather than pretend to be interested in your co-workers' weekend activities - start up a nice chat (with a side of caffeine) to get your neurons firing!

In classic Linda Richman SNL fashion, we'll give you a topic:
What is the most underrated sci-fi or fantasy movies that you like? Discuss.
Picture
We will even get you started...

Lindsey: Push is in my top ten, but most people have never heard of it. Dakota Fanning and Chris Evans were in it. It's everything I ever wanted X-Men to be...

Lauren: I thought I was the only one who owned that movie!
Annie: I thought the movie Chronicle was really good and possibly underrated. It made super powers realistic and those super powers highlighted the flaws and struggles of the main characters.

Lauren: Agreed. If you can get past the POV camera thing, it is one of the best superhero/villain 'origin stories' I've ever seen.
Picture
Annie: Equilibrium is another good underrated or forgotten about sci-fi flick. Basically Christian Bale + 1984.

Meghan: Seconded! Equilibrium is legit good. Well, good in that turn-of-the-century scifi sense. And it turns really badass towards the conclusion. (Turn-of-the-millenium?)
Picture
Lauren: Didn't it come out around the same time and The Matrix? It had a similar look in the commercials, so I think a lot of people thought it was a rip off. But the story is TOTALLY DIFFERENT. Wasn't it also one of the first western movies to use 'gun-kata' as a fighting technique?

Annie: And CB's character saves the puppy. It definitely gets to a "if that dog dies we're shutting this movie off" moment.
What would you add to the list?!

Age of Ultron: Roundtable (with spoilers!)

Jen: I saw Avengers: Age of Ultron for the second time this weekend, and enjoyed it thoroughly!  But I know many of my fellow writers at Geek Girls Inc. did not feel the same way.  Admittedly, my comic book pedigree is not as strong as it could be - I primarily got to know both Marvel and DC characters by watching the Super Friends in the 1980s and Batman: The Animated Series and the X-Men cartoons in the 1990s.  Also, I enjoy a movie with great action sequences, even if I have to check my brain at the door - so I asked my fellow GGI staffers what they thought were the pros and cons of Age of Ultron.
Lindsey:  Here are my thoughts on Age of Ultron:
  • Stunts & special effects are of course stunning
  • I dig Banner & Natasha, but why do female characters have to always be a romantic lead?
  • Is that the farm house from the walking dead?
  • Majority of extras were women and minorities
  • Sound effects from Star Wars
  • Elizabeth Olsen is the best actor in her family
  • Tony Stark carries yet another film
  • The typical snark
  • Hawkeye is still pretty lame and an unnecessary member of the team
  • James Spader can do no wrong
  • A few bits for the fanboys and fangirls (such as Wakanda)
Picture
The whole movie is basically summed up by this quote from Hawkeye: “The city is flying and we're fighting an army of robots. And I have a bow and arrow. Nothing makes sense.”

It's a fun action film, but not as good as the stand-alones.  Which shouldn't be a surprise.
Brooke:  Cons: several weird attempts at humor that fell flat, the ultimate supercomputer villain who had no reason to actually fail, the forced all-American-family-man Hawkeye story, the further stereotyping of Black Widow, and super long action scenes that were overly destructive.
Picture
Joelle: Con - 0% Loki!
Lauren: Pros: Just about everything - I even like the way they changed the creation stories for both Ultron and Vision (despite the fact they are not Comic Canon) to make sense with the MCU movies that have come before.
Picture
Con: I feel this movie suffers from "middle child syndrome." It seemed like a action-packed pipeline set to connect the movies before this, to all the next crop of movies leading up to Infinity Wars.  I think many moments didn't "land" because they were meant only as set-ups and Easter eggs for future films and they didn't serve the Ultron movie at all. It struggled not to be the prequel to Cap 3/Civil War rather than a single story on its own. Something I know bothered Joss, and ultimately drove him to leave MCU directing.
Picture
Meg: (Trigger warning: Unpopular opinion!!) Joss is gone?? Thank god!
Picture
Pros: Awesome action sequences, engaging storyline even for those with only a barely-passing knowledge of the Marvel Universe, and Scarlet Witch is the bomb dot com!

Cons: Black Widow, uppity woman, gets put back in her place; some weird all-American domestic scene; Joss Whedon's hi-larious yuks thrown in gratuitously; Ultron wasn't the most fun villain.

People more familiar with Marvel: does Ultron always talk like a sarcastic turbodouche? Or is talking like a teenager in desparate need of a swirly part of his character?

Lauren: I think they were trying to have him mirror they more egomaniacal aspects of Tony's personality.  And no - he is usually more robo-flat/maniacal like DC's Brainiac.
Picture
Meg: I figured-- but it would be nice to have a cold-scary-unfeeling robot as a foil to the plucky Avengers, instead of more Stark snark. I do love me some scary, unfeeling robots.

Lindsey: Thank goodness I'm not the only one who sees the Avenger movies as simply connection films to set up stand-alones!

SyFy Releases First Look at The Magicians

Early this year our local geeky book club pick was The Magicians by Lev Grossman. It spawned a very lively debate over brunch about unlikable heroes, hard core magic systems and world building, and how to walk the line between originality and creating a rip-off of Narnia meets Harry Potter with booze and boobs. The Magicians is all these things, and it is spectacular in both its successes and its flaws.

We are SO excited that SyFy is adaptation it as a TV series. This first look trailer has only made us MORE excited!
What do you think? Have you read the books? Are you excited or cautious?

The Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ, is best known for its outstanding collection of American Indian Art & History, but beginning tomorrow a special exhibit with a geeky twist will grace one of its galleries.  Super Heroes: Art! Action! Adventure! features famous heroes such as Wonder Woman and Spider-Man, as well as Native American heroes like Super Indian, (Su)perman, and Kagagi the Raven.
Picture
Life-size figures of Green Lantern and Batman welcome you to the exhibit, and visitors are immediately drawn into the story of Tribal Force, the first comic book to move beyond indigenous stereotypes.  It features a Native American team of superheroes created, written, and illustrated by American Indians.
Picture

Inside the exhibit, you can explore the work of American Indian comic book artists such as Arigon Starr (Super Indian and Diogi), Theo Tso (Captain Paiute and Bad Medicine), Jay Odjick (Kagagi and Windigo), and Virgil Ortiz (The Blind Archers and the Castillians).
Picture
Superheroes in fine art are also represented, with impressive pieces such as Susan Folwell’s Pueblo Girl (imagined as a cousin to Wonder Woman), Dominique Reano’s Pueblo Powerpuff Girls, and Jeffrey Veregge’s uniquely native versions of familiar superheroes.
Picture
Interactive parts of the exhibit will appeal to kids and adults who are kids at heart.  Visitors can make masks and capes, and even use technology  by urbanSTEW to dance and play alongside an animal companion of their choice.

The final wall of the exhibit is dedicated to real-life superheroes such as Po’Pay and the Choctaw Code Talkers of World War I.

Make sure to visit the Book Store on your way out - the Diogi t-shirts only come in child sizes, but the (Su)perman t-shirts and the graphic novels of characters featured in the exhibit are definitely worth a second look!

If you’re a native of Phoenix, or if your travels will bring you to Arizona this summer, Super Heroes: Art! Action! Adventure! is a must-see adventure for geeks of all ages!  This special exhibit will be at the Heard Museum from May 16 - August 23.

Thoughts on Supergirl

5/14/2015

I have been as critical as any about CBS's new Supergirl show.

Do I think that it is on the wrong network? Yes. But after seeing the trailer, do I think the show is completely on the wrong track? No, I do not - and I don't get all the feminist hate I'm seeing in my feed today.
This clip is the first time I had hope this show might not suck. I've seen a lot of comments saying her character is "too weak" and that it looks like the fake Black Widow trailer from SNL - and I see some of your points, but hear me out...

I feel like judging her entire character arc based on clips taken (out of context) from what is probably only the first 1 or 2 episodes, is short changing her (potential) character journey. Clearly she had been raised (like Clark) to hide her specialness, and is still fairly unaware of the extent of her powers.

In addition, from a production standpoint - the bulk of shots that are 'ready' for an early trailer are generally the dialogue or character-driven scenes, since action sequences for flying and other super powers require more post-production - so that may also be a reason why the trailer seems drama heavy vs. kick-ass.

BTWs - Giving her an Arrow-style 'team' upfront seems weird, but I'll go with it. It's better than the 'I must keep my secret from friends and loved ones' trope!

Anyway, my guess is that the show is about her finding her power, not just as a hero, but as a women. So, if she isn't a little 'weak' in the beginning, how will she grow? This is a TV series, not a movie - all her story isn't told in 2 hours!

They give away plenty (almost too much) in this teaser, but why should we criticize the whole series for not showing us every damned thing. If they did - why would we watch?

I'm willing to give this a shot - will you?

We've got the Devil on holiday, Frankenstein's monster re-envisioned, and a TV sequel to Minority Report. What do you think?

FOX has a wacky track record with genre TV, they stuck with Sleepy Hollow, Fringe and the X-Files, but let go cult shows like Firefly, The Tick, Wonderfalls and Almost Human. Do you think any of these show have staying power on FOX?

It's Renewal and Cancellation Time!

Good News Everyone!
Marvel's Agent Carter season 2 is a go!
Picture
Picture
We were dubious about the SHIELD spin-off featuring Mockingbird and Lance Hunter, so no hearts are broken here that it didn't get a pick-up. Here's hoping that just means the characters stick around on AoS, which was officially renewed for season 3...

Also picked up is Orphan Black season 4 (as we reported yesterday), NBC's Grimm, Fox's Gotham and Sleepy Hollow, and CW favorites Arrow, The Flash, Supernatural and newcomer, iZombie (also, The Vampire Diaries, The 100 and The Originals, if you watch them.)

You can find a complete list here.

The Arrow/Flash super team-up spinoff got an official pick-up as well as a name -
DC's Legends of Tomorrow.
Picture
More excitement surrounds the official pick-up of the rumored Muppet Show revival on ABC (cue arm flail.)
Picture
One bit of terrible news is that ABC has cancelled Forever (sorry Lindsey, I liked that show too!) One less sexy British accent on TV is very sad.
Picture
Speaking of British accents, one of my favorites, Constantine, is still on the bubble - so fingers crossed! #SaveConstantine

UPDATE: NBC just pulled the plug on Constantine. I'm going to go cry in the corner now...
